Maya Angelou once said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
Who We Are
The Writing Partnership, Inc. is a community engaged, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Albany New York. We seek to empower the residents of the Capital Region to find their voices and tell their stories. We achieve this by building one-on-one partnerships between students from several Colleges and students from the Capital region who are refugees or immigrants. Our program promotes literacy through exercises centered around writing, reading comprehension, and communication skills. Our goal is to prepare members of the community for higher education. We are striving to strengthen the recent populations of the capital region for a more culturally literate future.

What We Do
We pair our student volunteers with young adult learners who are non-native English speakers, in order to aid their progress in learning the English language and adjusting to the United States. These students range in age from 14 to 22. During weekly sessions , we focus on developing their ability to write and communicate in English, helping them find their voice in their community. These sessions include exciting activities between the Siena students and Writing Partnership students to help foster their relationships.
Our partnership is currently being held on Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:30 PM at Bishop Maginn High School in Albany during the academic year. Our doors are always open, and we welcome new members every week.

Who We Help
Our program offers help to any young adult in the Capital Region who is a non-native English speaker. The majority of our students are refugees from Southeast Asia. They are part of the Karen, an ethnic group indigenous to the border region of Thailand and Burma/Myanmar. For over 50 years, the Karen have suffered persecution at the hands of the Burmese military regime, causing thousands of them to flee to refugee camps in Thailand. Many of the Karen people have since been resettled in the United States, particularly the Capital Region. The Writing Partnership has developed a relationship with the Karen community in Albany and is dedicated to helping its youth succeed.
